Zuckerberg edits the Facebook manifesto regarding monitoring private messages

The earlier said statement would contradict the social giant’s policy of keeping Facebook users safe without compromising their privacy.

Mark Zuckerberg had initially shared his vision of future Facebook in 6,000 word “Facebook Manifesto”. In the post, he had briefly mentioned about how AI can be used to curb terrorist propaganda. In the post published on Thursday, he wrote “Right now, we’re starting to explore ways to use AI to tell the difference between news stories about terrorism and actual terrorist propaganda so we can quickly remove anyone trying to use our services to recruit for a terrorist organization.” however, the post was different compared to the original one.

The earlier version of the post was published in advance on news outlets before it was published on Facebook. Zuckerberg wrote, “long-term promise of AI is that it can be used used to “identify risks that nobody would have flagged at all, including terrorists planning attacks using private channels.” The original post mentioned that AI might be capable of flagging risks that other technologies cannot such as terrorists planning attacks via private channels. However, the new post published didn’t mention anything about private channels. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the revision as shown below:

“Looking ahead, one of our greatest opportunities to keep people safe is building artificial intelligence to understand more quickly and accurately what is happening across our community … Going forward, there are even more cases where our community should be able to identify risks related to mental health, disease or crime.”
