JoGiv launched “Ecolekt” at SURGE 2016 to further E-waste collection and Recycling in India

A team of entrepreneurs from JoGiv have started out with a vision of addressing the most dire need of today’s urban community – how to manage the e-waste? “JoGiv” – stands for joy of giving and is a for profit social enterprise and aims at providing out-of-box innovative solutions for the current pressing issues. E-waste poses a great threat to today’s urban India. E-waste if not managed properly can destroy human health. This campaign by JoGiv raises awareness about the importance of safe disposal of this waste and recycling. The company conducted a study which showed that a majority of people agree that the e-waste must be recycled and also expressed concerns about unavailability of proper measures to do so. With revolutions like digital revolution and Make In India, India is becoming more and more tech savvy.

Soon, it will overtake USA in usage of laptops, mobiles, tablets and so on. Unfortunately, the country’s e-waste disposal system is much disorganized and most of this waste ends up in landfills. The study also highlighted the harmful effects of poorly disposed e-waste. The waste can get mixed up with the water and create toxic waste that can affect the environment adversely. JoGiv is in talks with partners to initiate placing of collection bins across the cities where people can give their e-waste for recycling. This is a new path taken by a startup to spread awareness about the issue and connect to waste donors through their application ‘Ecolekt’.

The app will interact with the citizens and make them more aware of the issue through a series of activities and will encourage them to support the cause by recycling.
