Facebook posts its diversity report, showing below par results

The social media giant, Facebook, is an employer to 9,199 people, as of December 2014. Now, a new diversity report has disgraced Facebook. The report shows that Facebook has a lot of work to do if it wants to improve its workforce diversity. Many advocacy groups are now urging Facebook to take steps towards it. Three diversity reports were first published by Facebook in 2014 and since then there has not been much change, at least in terms of numbers. The data suggests that the number of women increased by just 1% over the past year, since Facebook first released the diversity figures in June 2014. As of now, 68% of the total employees are men and the rest 32% are women. The report related to minority participation was also released. It suggested that although they grew by 2% from the last year’s 47%to 49%, it was Asians that brought about the maximum change. Further the women employees among the staffers also increased by 1%, 31% in the last year to 32% this year.

Maxine Williams, Global Director of Diversity at Facebook, in a post wrote: “While we have achieved positive movement over the last year, it’s clear to all of us that we still aren’t where we want to be. There’s more work to do.” Clearly, the company also wanted to improve its diversity ratio and hire employees from wide groups of people. The stats showed that diversity in the medium and top leadership positions did not see much change either. However, the number of Asians increased from 19% to 21%. Although there was an increase in the number of Asians, the percentage of Hispanics representing the company decreased from 4% to 3%.

The tech industry has always been a workplace in which the numbers favor men in terms of employment. Although the number of women has been on the rise in the industry, the rise is quite slow. It’s not just Facebook who has posted its diversity ratio online, since last year many companies have started posting them online. But the trend seems to be the same for all these companies; the workforce is largely comprised of white males. However, experts are hopeful that the companies’ attitude towards increasing diversity will ultimately bear fruit.
