Well, it’s certainly not the first time that dietary guidelines have been opposed. They come out every five years for the purpose of spreading awareness about the food habits among the people. These are to be followed by school lunches, food packaging labels and other similar sectors. The present guidelines are only in the proposed format right now and the final version is expected to be released at the end of 2015 by the department of Agriculture and Health and Human services. It was also suggested by the advisory committee that the sugary beverages and snacks should be taxed so that people will either reduce their consumption or stop it. This step can be related to the present health situations in the US as many people are obese and overweight.
The Democratic Congresswoman, Rosa DeLauro, in an interview said that these recommendations were ideologically based. She also said that they have to go with science and they keep saying they want to go with science but then when science dictates something they don’t agree with, they say, Oh well, we don’t like that science.
