Annie 2014 Review: Movie has a huge star cast

Annie is a modern day remake of the 1982 American musical comedy which is an adaptation of a Broadway musical with the same name. This movie has a huge star cast and directed by an Ace director and with Will Smith as one of the producers. Annie is a musical loved by all and it’s a classic and this modern adaptation has created a lot of hype and hoopla in the Hollywood circuit because of its huge star cast including Jamie Fox, Cameron Diaz, and Rose Byrne. The character Annie is played by a young, talented and promising singer and artist Quvenzhane Wallis who was also nominated for an academy award. The movie is based on the life of an orphan Annie and her search for her parents and the events which takes place when she meets a successful businessman Will Stacks.

The plot thickens when Will Stack played by Jamie fox saves Annie from a truck becomes a hero and gets high approval rating which also helps him in his Mayor Election race. Will Stack is vouched by his employee to use this to his campaign and draw more votes. Annie wins the billionaires heart during this process and Annie’s caretaker who is Miss Hannigan played by Cameron Diaz tries hard to reap money from this ordeal as well.

Then Will decides to adopt Annie after bonding with her, but he is devastated to know the Annie’s real parents have come into the picture. Annie’s parents are falsely set up by Will’s assistant to get him away from Annie’s distraction, but later with some fast car and helicopter chase the fake parents are caught and the truth is discussed and Will quits the mayoral race and adopts Annie realizing his love for her. Annie’s character in this present musical is from the tough neighborhood of Harlem and this modern take of the old Annie fails to keep the audiences entangled to the screen.  The first half keeps you excited at times with some family and rude humor and warm musical numbers.

The second half of the plot is where it slows down with sentiments and not so impressive musical numbers with the vocals being not likeable. The director loses it in the screenplay where the sweetness and the charisma of the old musical Annie are missing.

Annie is a musical and keeping that in mind the movie is fairly good, but the songs could have been made better with more suitable vocals. Despite few normal performances the movie is recommended for music lovers and this is not recommended for the younger generation who are into action, horror, thriller and other offbeat movies. With mediocre performances all around and not so catchy musical numbers from the movie the voice and the performance of Annie played by Quvenzhane Wallis will be in your mind after exiting the theaters. The end verdict would be the movie may not run well in the box office, but is a suitable movie for the family during the weekend.
