And as per the latest news updates of Friday, 17 October 2014 – 7:57pm IST: “Jayalalithaa will be released. but tomorrow (18 October 2014) because we have yet to complete formalities for her release from the prison,” Jayalalithaa senior counsel B Kumar told PTI here.
“We will get the Supreme Court order copy by today evening. Tomorrow, we will approach the special court and furnish surety to secure my client’s (Jayalalithaa) release,” he said.
DIG Prisons P M Jaisimha said the release will happen “definitely tomorrow.” He had earlier said formalities would be completed today. After the news of bail AIADMK supporters celebrated near the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, where Ms. Jayalalithaa was lodged since from September 27th. Jayalalithaa, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state has been in the Bangalore jail for about three weeks as she was convicted & sentenced to prison for four years by a trial court under an 18-year old 60 crore assets case. Today Supreme Court has granted a bail to Jayalalithaa, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after a bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu stayed the sentence.
And Supreme Court further directed Ms Jayalalithaa lawyers to file the documents within two months & get the early disposal of the appeal of Jayalalithaa in the Karnataka High Court against sentence. And on December 18 Supreme Court will notify the High Court to proceed on the case within 3 months from then. And Supreme Court has said to the AIADMK chief to advice the party workers to be calm & behave decorously, in light of the complaint of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy that Jayalalithaa followers have made threats & damaged property after her conviction.
Supreme Court also said that in case papers aren’t filed by that time then this bail will be cancelled. And Ms. Jayalalithaa lawyer, Fali Nariman gave the assurance to the court that documents will be ready within 6 weeks of time & will forward for the speedy disposal of Ms. Jayalalithaa appeal.
Jayalalithaa close aide Sasikala and her relatives V N Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi, who are also lodged in the same prison since September 27, were also granted bail.
On September 27, Ms. Jayalalithaa & three others were convicted by Special Court Judge John Michael D’Cunha for four years in a disproportionate assets case of Rs 66.65 crore that went on for 18 years. The Karnataka High Court had on October 7 rejected the bail pleas of Jayalalithaa and the three others, following which they moved the apex court.
Ms. Jayalalithaa loyalist Panneerselvam took over as Chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
