Google planning to buy Twitch - Bangalorean Mag

A little while ago we heard the news of AT&T planning to buy DirecTV. Now there is another news of billion – dollar acquisition. Google / YouTube has plans for buying twitch.tv that allows gamers to watch other people playing games live. Google has proposed a price tag of 1 billion for this increasingly popular service. As per the reports from Variety, the deal is almost done but has not been officially announced. On the other hand the WSJ says the deal is still in very early phase.

Twitch was launched in 2011 and since then it has never looked back. Gamers like to watch other people play games to learn and entertainment. Few years back we had Justin.tv which was used for streaming live video from one’s webcam. Few years after its launch, it came to the notice of its founders that the site’s gaming channels are getting a good audience. So in 2011, they turned these gaming channels in to a separate site which we now know by the name of twitch.tv. By the end of 2013, it grew so big that the company was renamed as Twitch Interactive. The site is focused on video gaming and e – sports. It covers electronic sports in real – time including personal streams of the players, related talk shows, tournaments’ coverage etc. Twitch gets around 43 million viewers every month.
