SanDisk and Toshiba flash memory shrink further

The SanDisk NAND and Toshiba flash memory have been shrunk to a much smaller size i.e., to 15nm process. These chips offer a 533 mbps data transfer rate as said in a report by Toshiba. This 15 – nanometer process technology has been developed by SanDisk and Toshiba in partnership that will soon see wide use in tablets and Smartphones. This development – first of its kind will mark a great change replacing second generation 19nm technology. The production is expected to begin at Yokkaichi plant in Japan. Process technology is concerned with the method and size of developing the chips. The feature that makes NAND memory so desirable and efficient is its capability to retain data without use of power. This technology would be applicable to 128 gigabit (16GB) NAND flash memory.

These chips offer a high – speed interface which increases the data transfer rate by 1.3 times when compared to the 19 nm process technology i.e., 533 mbps. The mass production will commence by this April’s end. SanDisk promoted it as the most cost effective and smallest 128 gigabit chip of the world and will be available as 1Z – nm process node. This technology will be used in enterprise SSDs and removable cards as said in an e –mail by a SanDisk spokesman. Benefit to the customer is its price which is lower than the previous node.
