Turkey Police Arrests Extortionists that Stole $3.54 million Worth of Bitcoins

The businessman who was stalked to the parking lot of his car was threatened to disclose his Bitcoin possession and online banking password.

According to Turkish news publication Habertürk, A gang of five extortionists who were targeting Bitcoin holders were captured by the Turkey police. The gang was caught in Merter which is a popular suburb located in the west of Istanbul. The big city of Istanbul has garnered widespread attention ever since the police went for the operation bringing out the biggest crime related to Bitcoin in Turkey. This week, the extortionists had taken 450 bitcoins that is estimated to be around $3.54 million from a businessman.

The businessman who was stalked to the parking lot of his car was threatened to disclose his Bitcoin possession and online banking password over the gun point after being kidnapped in a van. The victim was held captive for over 8 hours and finally let go after the transactions were over. The businessman immediately filed a complaint with the Turkey police and they started on with the investigations immediately. The gang was caught in just few hours from then as they had not covered their tracks properly.

The police caught the criminals red-handed as they were planning for yet another extortion of Bitcoins. It is said that they had stolen a bitcoin mining device from yet another person in the district. The extortionists have previous criminal records and were jailed for such criminal activities before. The leader of the gang had been sentenced to 30 years imprisonment and yet another extortionist managed to escape the scene. It is astonishing to find that the criminals were targeting Bitcoin holders for extorting Bitcoins.
