Well, this is being called the match of the century – the South Korean master of Go (which is an ancient and very complex board game) versus the Google computer program. Guess who took home the trophy? The Google computer program!
The program called “AlphaGo” recorded a 4-1 victory against Lee Se-dol. This is a historic moment for the Google AI researchers and programmers who have been trying to build programs capable of outwitting humans.
The Korean Go master, Lee Se-dol said, “It made me question human creativity. When I saw AlphaGo’s moves, I wondered whether the Go moves I have known were the right ones. Its style was different, and it was such an unusual experience that it took time for me to adjust.”
He further added, “AlphaGo made me realize that I must study Go more.” Mr. Lee is one of the most accomplished players of the world.
Go is an ancient Chinese strategy game that involves two participants. It is believed to be 3,000 years ago. The players play to gain territory by placing black and white stones on the board consisting of 19 horizontal and vertical lines.
It had been predicted by AI experts that it will take 10 years to develop the program to the extent that it will be capable of beating game masters. But AlphaGo has surprised all. Mr. Lee has so far won 18 international titles. Out of the 5 rounds, AlphaGo won 3 rounds. Google plans to donate the $1 million prize money to Unicef.
