There are around 142 million Facebook users in India. India also has the largest number of researchers contributing to the social media giant’s bug bounty programme.
Adam Ruddermann of Facebook’s Bug Bounty Team said, “India is home to the largest population of security researchers (205) participating in the Facebook bug bounty programme since its inception in 2011. The country also holds the top spot for most bounties paid (Rs 48.4 million).”
A bug can either cause the program to crash or lead to other defects which can be exploited for unauthorized access. Facebook launched its Bug bounty programme back in 2011 and has received 2,400 submissions till date and over $4.3 million have been awarded to more than 800 researchers around the world. The programme rewards researchers who identify vulnerabilities and security bugs in the Facebook’s services.
This time it received 13,233 submissions out of which 526 were considered valid. The highest number of payouts were awarded to researchers from India, Trinidad, Tobago and Egypt.
Ruddermann said, “Facebook receives more and more high-impact bugs (related reports) from India each year, reflecting the growing sophistication and technical capabilities of the country’s engineering schools and cyber security programmes.”
