The four characters being Lilith the Siren, Mordecai the Hunter, Brick the Berserker and Roland the Soldier. After this the player has to complete various missions assigned by game characters and bounty cards, the reward of which is in form of money, experience points or some other item.
The enemies include both humans and non-humans. As the player gains experience in the game, the skill points can be allocated to a skill tree which shows specialization of the character. Initially the player is given only two weapon slots which later increases to 4 plus other slots for energy shield, grenade etc. players can sell items in exchange for money which can again be used to purchase better items. Borderlands has one unique feature which is that the weapons are generated randomly. The game deploys a “procedural content creation system” for generating these weapons as well as items. The rarity of an item or a weapon is denoted by a color coded scale. It was being said that around 17 million weapons and items could be generated by the system. However, the number came close only to 3,500,000. The game is set on a different planet called ‘Pandora’. The game runs on Unreal Game engine.
