The Fashion Week will kick off this September 10 and with that fashion industry prepares itself for the next top model. The research team has shown that the Instagram could be successfully used in predicting a model’s popularity. The research is being led by Ferrara from School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University. The team ran analyzation on all models’ Instagram accounts cataloguing information like number of followers, number of likes, positive and negative comments, likes on comments and number of posts every month. The team said their framework has worked pretty well in predicting this year’s top model. The framework accurately project 6 out of 8 models to become top model.
Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia, researcher, said that the study shows the importance of social media in culture and that the genre is rapidly changing. The six models as spotted by the framework for 2015 were Arina Levchenko, Melanie Culley, Phillipa Hemphrey, renata Scheffer, Sofia Tesmenitskaya and Sasha Antonowskaia. More than the average number of posts indicated higher chances with 15 percent of walking a runway. The study also revealed a surprising fact that these chances could be lowered by 10 percent if there were more likes.
According to the study, “Traditionally, models don’t interact with consumers; but now their online activity plays an important role in popularity and, ultimately, success.” According to the team there are 20 top modelling agencies that can make a huge contribution to the success of a model. However, Instagram plays no lesser role in making a model successful.
