Paul Munter, an epidemiologist from the School of Public Health, Birmingham said that these fluctuations in blood pressure can cause a lot of trouble. Munter conducted the research along with other researchers on a large number of individuals to find if there’s a connection between these fluctuation and heart failure. The group of people was US based and a number of the subjects have been known to have heart and weight related problems. As obesity can directly influence the blood pressure levels, obese people are known to have heart problems. According to statistics, one in every three US citizens suffer from heart problems which make studies like this an utmost necessity.
These epidemiologists look at the overall picture of diseases in the population and attempt to find similarities or patterns. After this, they start conducting studies on sensitive matter that need immediate action for the betterment of the society. As a result, the lawmakers and other experts consider these studies to get a better look at the present situation.
The study involved 26,000 people who were taking blood pressure medication and were under any form of treatment for their heart problems. These people were selected so that they could provide a good insight into the relation between blood pressure fluctuations and heart failure. The results were quite depressing. According to the researchers, the people who had over 14mmHg variations in their blood pressure were at a 25 per cent increased risk of having a heart failure. The researchers examined these people for period of 6 to 28 months and in that time they were tested 5-7 times on average.
Studies like these should not be taken lightly and people should not assume that even a little bit of fluctuation in blood pressure is okay for them and get checked by physicians immediately. Blood pressure should be measured regularly and any changes should be reported without delay.
