‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Movie Review

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ remains loyal to book’s focal point sex scenes, but doesn’t push the envelope. Taylor-Johnson, the Director, and her screenwriter, Kelly Marcel, has succeeded in stripping the book. Though the chemistry of Dakota Johnson with costar Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey, who is a billionaire) does not sizzle always but she has given a smart convincing performance as heroine (Anastasia Steele).

Transformation of E. L. James’ S&M romance novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” should have pushed those doubts, if Hollywood still has, apart permanently about women can dominate at box office. We have learnt this thing from James that with pain we take the pleasure, in addition to suitable behaviors stuffed in certain conditions.  Any movie version was surely destined to boost up the Valentine’s Day with her erotic trilogy as that is the huge global phenomenon. Being honest, at the same time, her writing style is nearly as renowned for its cringe worthy dialogue as its fearless sex scenes.

It’s the credit of Sam Taylor-Johnson (the Director) and Kelly Marcel (the screen writer) who have unclad the 1st book of its major flaws, honoring its essence, at the same time. However, the leading Dakota Johnson represents herself as an ideal heroine in spite of all the fears related to her less sizzling chemistry with costar Jamie Dornan.

Unfortunately, Dornan’s Christian Grey, never turns out to be anything more than a pretty face.

The movie makers depict their sense of humor up front by bringing together, the leads in care free, meet cute style. When journalist roommate (Eloise Mumford) of College senior Anastasia Steele (Johnson) gets sick then she is bound into interviewing the billionaire businessman Christian Grey (Dornan). Although he is as arrogant as she is inexperienced, they still gets connected instantly. She is reluctant and he is controlling, especially when she gets to know what is meant by “controlling”

Sam Taylor-Johnson, the Director, has well balanced the atmosphere with action.

In case you are not familiar, Christian loves dominancy in all aspects of his life. He wishes Ana, with her complete agreement, to be submissive in the same way. He loves to direct her what to how to eat, what to wear and who to look at. She gets punished if she resists. This makes the audience familiar with Christian’s notorious Red Room of Pain, a crimson prison lavishly equipped with all kind of harnesses, shackle and flogger which can be handled by an R-rated movie.

Both the actors get stripped down and the highlighted scenes of the book are truly recreated. But anyone who is hoping the movie to undoubtedly push the envelope of S&M must find a little vanilla from Christian’s tastefully shot toy room.

Christian’s notorious Red Room of Pain is equipped with S&M toys but the movie does not push the envelope.

There are some other flaws which fans would have to overlook other than discomfort of Dornan. Yes! Some of the most intense moments pressurize to cross the border into camp. The film makers gain points only for cutting many excesses of the novel. But, still better that they improvised Ana into a complete and more interesting character admirable of her complex and alluring scenario. Only if we are not left getting wondered what Dorman secretly desires from his contract.
