The new smart TV platform with webOS 2.0 was unveiled at the CES 2015. The new version is twice as fast as the previous one and provides a simple user experience. The 4K Ultra HD content streaming is also supported. The platform has been expanded to hotel TVs which allows the customers to enjoy the features of IoT at places other than their homes. And also revealed that LG is working on a platform that apart from tracking and reporting about customer’s wellness, also cares about it. LG has created bio signal analysis technologies that can be integrated into wearable devices. These devices can be used by people to help them with their physical health management. The device also helps in cultivating good sleeping habits. One’s environment can also be optimized using this wellness platform. The platform is capable of controlling the air conditioners and water heaters.
The second thing upon which LG has focussed is connectivity. Regarding LG’s plans to connect devices and technologies, Ahn said that there is an increasing demand for connecting smartphones to cars and so LG has expanded IoT to the cars. This has been done by V2X (vehicle to everything) technologies. This commercial connectivity solution mirrors iOS and Android devices to the car display. This technology supports other solutions such as MirrorLink and is also highly customizable. LG is using open standards to interconnect various technologies. AllSeen Alliance and Lg are working together for adopting AllJoyn open connectivity platform.
The global standard for IoT i.e., oneM2M is being heavily used by LG. it aims at developing a broad connectivity technology for linking various gateways and devices connected to the cloud. This would allow the LG products to cooperate with other devices from other brands without any problem. To achieve this goal LG is working closely with the iControl OpenHome ecosystem members and other smart home service providers. LG’s smart home services would range from home automation to security. HomeChat was introduced last year and enables the use of NLP (natural language processing) for controlling as well as monitoring the devices. It is also working in collaboration with Nest Labs. Soon HomeChat would be made compatible with the Nest products. It is also expected to connect to the cars in near future. It works by having you give voice commands about your destination. The destination will be added to the navigation system which will guide you safely to your destination.
