With the boom in the touch screen smartphones market, the world has also witnessed the infamous long drawn patent fight between the two giants. While Apple accused Samsung for copying the iPhone designs, Samsung was quick enough to counter it with the claim that Apple was using bits of its wireless – transmission technology without permission. The battle saw no side actually winning neither did it see any fall in the sales. Even the judges had asked both the companies to settle the dispute amongst themselves rather than blowing it out of proportion. They also insisted the companies to settle the dispute outside the court.
The world has witnessed some amount of de-escalation between both the companies much before the announcement was formally made in press. In June both the companies had agreed to drop their appeals of the patent- infringement case at the U.S International Trade Commission. That patent suit has resulted in the ban of some older models of Samsung phones. Not only this, even Apple and Google Inc announced a deal in May about dropping all lawsuits against one another related to the Motorola Mobility. It should be noted here that Apple and Google Inc makes the android mobile operating system that Samsung uses in most of its smartphones. What remains to be seen it whether they will end all the legal battles or will it be confined to the patient issue only. Both the companies refrained from stating whether they will or have reached any cross licensing agreement.
Now it remains to be seen whether Samsung and Apple will pay any heed to the fact that Huawei and Lenovo are gaining market share globally with low prices or would they continue to fight against one other. Only time can say.
