Google Docs Removed From The List Of Banned Websites

Multi Screen Media petitioned against banning of websites that were streaming world cup matches live to the Indian audience. Acting on that petition, Delhi high court ordered blocking of total 472 websites including Google docs and Google’s URL shortener. Multi Screen Media had acquired the broadcasting rights for the ongoing FIFA World Cup and they reportedly have suffered substantial revenue loss due to the live streaming of the matches in various websites.

However, the news caused quite a stir on the social media as many people tried to figure out how a word processing and sharing service like Google docs could possibly have infringed on Multi Screen Media’s copyright. MSM apparently worked with MarkScan to identify the websites that were violating IPs, they submitted the list of 472 websites identified by MarkScan to the court.

Airtel soon approached the court asking them to name specified URL’s to be blocked instead of entire websites. MSM disagreed with this plea but revised the list of websites and a new list of 219 websites was submitted to the court. Google docs or any other Google websites were not included in this new list. According to a Google spokesperson, there is no interruption of Google services as of now.
