Amazon [stock_market_widget type=”inline” symbol=”AMZN” template=”chart” color=”default” refresh_frequency=”30″] is already one of the biggest online retailers in the world, and they are not slowing down. Recently Amazon announced that they will be hiring around 30,000 workers in the US for part time jobs. 5000 of those will have the option to work from home. They are also creating 100,000 full time jobs in the US in the next one and half year.
Amazon’s Virtual Customer Service department has 5000 openings. They offer the opportunity to employees to work from the comfort of their homes. This innovative program is in its 5th year now and so far seems to have worked out without a hitch. Part time employees who work from home and work at Amazon at least 20 hours per week will be able to reap the benefit of Amazon’s Career Choice program. Under this program Amazon pre-pays 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields that an employee wants to pursue even if the course has no relevance to Amazon’s jobs. Till date over 9,000 employees have made use of this program and more are following suit. Employees with 20 or more hours on the clock are also eligible for other benefits like life and disability insurance, fully paid dental and vision insurance, and funding towards medical insurance.
“There are lots of people who want or need a flexible job—whether they’re a military spouse, a college student, or a parent—and we’re happy to empower these talented people no matter where they happen to live,” said Tom Weiland, Amazon Vice President for Worldwide Customer Service. “We’re finding that roles with Virtual Customer Service are particularly attractive to military spouses who want to continue working and parenting, even if their spouse is deployed or the family is relocated, as often happens with military families. Wounded, injured or ill military veterans and others with mobility challenges are also enjoying these opportunities to work from home with Amazon. Both active duty and retired service men and women support our country and we are happy to support them.”
Amazon already has 10,000 military veterans working for them and they have plans to hire 25,000 more veterans and military spouses in the next five years. The announcement of the new job opportunity comes at the time when more and more retailers are shutting down outlets and cutting out jobs.
Apart from the 5000 virtual Customer service jobs, they will be hiring 25,000 people on a part time basis across the country. These workers will sort and consolidate packages for customers in different Amazon sortation and fulfillment centers. As of now the company has over 40,000 employees in their roster working part time. Majority of these employees are either students or stay-at-home parents who are trying to earn some money during breaks in their busy schedules.
