In a section of Fox and Friends that aired just ahead of the big congressional address, Trump provided insight into the upcoming speech. The most important points of interest in the address will be military expenditure, healthcare, economy and illegal immigration. The address is much anticipated and even the stock and currency markets seem to be holding their breath.
There is likely to be far reaching consequences of the speech. Incidentally the Trump administration has proposed a hike in the defense budget by 10%, resulting in cutbacks in other areas of government spending, which is likely to be a key issue. Another important point might be the rollback of Obamacare.
In the 10 minute section, Trump also explained his decision to avoid the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump made his decision to skip the dinner public through a tweet he posted last week. This hasn’t happened in nearly six decades. Harry Truman was the last president to have skipped this dinner. “I am not a hypocrite. I haven’t been treated properly. That’s fine,” Trump told Fox News when asked why he has taken this decision. He said he had great respect for the press, but a lot of stories about him circulating in the media are not true. The President’s relationship with the media isn’t very good and he admitted as much, saying he gives himself a C or C plus in terms of messaging.
The segment of the interview also speaks about Obamacare which Trump considers a complete disaster. He also admits that healthcare is more complicated than he thought especially because of its link to other aspects of the economy. Though they haven’t yet ironed out all the details, the Trump administration is working to come up with a viable healthcare plan that would replace Obamacare in the near future.
