Google announces online courses in India, partners up with Udacity

Technology giant, Google, and online education company Udacity on Monday launched IT courses in India. Through this program, Google is trying to tap the millions of software developers in India who are currently scrambling for jobs. The above mentioned pair has teamed up with the Indian conglomerate Tata to offer online technical training courses. These courses will focus on teaching software developers to build apps for Android, which is a Google backed Operating System. The online course will cost 9,800 INR or $148 a month and the duration is most likely to be between six to nine months.

During this period, the developers will receive lessons from Google Instructors based in the United States. The course will appeal to the students economically since there is a lot to learn and once the students graduate, they will get 50 per cent of their tuition fees back. India is home to an army of developers, and Google is looking to cash in on skilling up many of India’s 3.6 million developers. India is also home to the second largest number of software developers in the world. Google fits right in this scenario as it is also looking for more developers who can program for Android devices. Google India managing director Rajan Anandan told reporters in India’s IT hub of Bangalore,” While India has millions of software developers, we still lag behind in creating world-class apps.” This clearly suggests that the representation of Indian apps in the global market is very less keeping in mind the amount of software developers it produces.

Apart from the courses, Google will also offer 1,000 scholarships and all the graduates will be invited to a job fair next year hosted by Google in India. This launch of a job fair also has its strategic importance as the Indian Prime Minister; Mr. Narendra Modi will be heading to Silicon Valley this weekend as a part of a visit to the US. However, the main focus of this visit will be to seek foreign investment in a large number of Indian start-ups as well as more financial tie-ups with US tech giants. Mr. Modi will meet Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg and is expected to reassure IT CEOs of efforts to reduce red tape and make it easier to do business in India. The 1.2 billion people market can be a gold mine for tech giants like these if approached in the right way.
