In a study in which a few participants took part, the subjects were found to be at a lower risk to a number of deadly diseases at the end of the study. These diseases include aging, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases etc. In the 19 people who tried the diet, the results were astonishing and so promising that the researchers are now trying to get it approved by the FDA so that it can be introduced in the meal plans of patients.
Petronella Ravenshear who is a nutritional therapist in London said,” The new diet is less of a stressor on the body. It supplies most of the carbohydrates in the form of vegetable which are packed with phytonutrients and minerals than grain-derived carbohydrates which don’t supply much except sugar.”
The co-author of this study, Valter D. Longo described the diet as a way to reboot the body of a person by eliminating dead cells and regenerating new ones. The diet does not include extreme fasting and for 25 days the people under study can eat what they would normally eat. Then on the first day of the diet they would eat 1090 calories which includes 10 percent protein, 56 percent fat and 34 percent carbohydrates. For the remaining days, they were required to have 725 calories consisting of 9 percent protein, 44 percent fat, and 47 percent carbohydrates. These numbers can be attained scientifically but would be hard for a normal person if he or she wishes to follow it.
The study does provide a good way to have better health and reduced risks against various diseases but it would take more testing before the other nutritionists and doctors start recommending it for their patients.
